Gay fathers, Jonathan and David, have to find a way to pay for their Christian, conservative daughter Lucy’s tuitions when she is accepted to Southern Methodist University. The only problem is that their flowershop, corporate plant care business, Gardens of Babylon, has gone bust. To solve the problem, they plan to stage and rig a beauty pageant using their workers as contestants--one of whom is an undocumented Latino named Eduardo--so that Lucy will be the sure winner. To get churches to sponsor the event, they solicit the Reverend Feltwell, Senior, a prominent televangelist, to be the MC for the pageant, but the letter is intercepted by his highly libidinous, drunkard son who was recently involved in a sex scandal but who aspires to a televangelist empire that will surpass his fathers. Because of a mix up, a young woman named Mary, who is fleeing her aunt and uncles reptile farm, and two young Jewish dykes--who call themselves the Temple Twins and hope to attend Wellesley, rather than Yeshiva-- show up to compete in the pageant. Mary’s arrival is accompanied by a series of “miracles.” Meanwhile, in an attempt to win the affections of Lucy, The Reverend ends up kissing the cross-dressed Eduardo. The encounter precipitates a drinking binge and crisis of faith for the Doctor Reverend Feltwell who stumbles upon the Temple Twins having a sexual tryst, which involves one of them dressed in an angel costume stored in the warehouse. The Reverend mistakes the Temple Twin as a real angel and engages in a discussion with God via the angel. The angels convinces the Reverend to continue with the pageant even though he has his suspicions about the sex of the contestants. The pageant involves the “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” evening wear competition, rapid-fire, Bible knowledge elimination rounds, and a talent portion. In the end, the crown goes to the most deserving, and everyone comes closer to the divine.
